Plumber in Selah

Selah at a glance

Selah is a city just north of Yakima with 8,153 people at the 2020 census. It was incorporated on March 17, 1919, and its name comes from an Indigenous word meaning "still water" or "smooth water".

What that means for your plumbing

A city that has grown for more than a century has homes from many eras side by side. Older houses may still have galvanized supply pipe that rusts from the inside, while newer subdivisions use plastic lines. Low pressure at one tap is often the first clue; see fixture repair and remodels.

Orchards and the Wenas Valley

Selah sits close to the orchards of the Wenas Valley, and more of it now serves as a bedroom community for Yakima. Homes on the edge of town with acreage may have wells, long yard lines and irrigation taps. Draining those before the first freeze saves a lot of spring repairs.

The apple juice capital

Selah is often called "The Apple Juice Capital of the World" thanks to the orchards and processing plants around it. The Tree Top fruit co-operative, set up in 1960, has its headquarters and two plants here, and fruit companies keep warehouses near the rail and road links. Up the Wenas Valley, Wenas Lake is an irrigation reservoir, and Wenas Creek is where the Wenas Creek Mammoth was found. Homes in a town shaped by fruit and water often have extra taps, outbuildings and irrigation connections. Each one is another place for a slow leak to hide.
