Moxee is a small suburban city southeast of Yakima with 4,326 people at the 2020 census. It ranked fifth of 279 eligible Washington communities for population growth between 2000 and 2005.

Farm country

Moxee's sandy soil and mild climate suited hops and grapes, and irrigation projects opened up farmland for new settlers around the turn of the twentieth century. Homes on rural lots may still rely on wells, pressure tanks and irrigation taps that need winter care.

A French-Canadian town

Moxee was first settled in 1867 by Mortimer Thorp and several French-Canadian farmers. A warm spring on the Thorp ranch steamed all year and never froze, and the native name for an edible root, Moxee, was adopted for the settlement. A French school stood on La Framboise Road, and masses at Holy Rosary Parish were said in French up to World War I. The town incorporated in 1921, and street names such as Charron, Faucher, Beaudry and St. Hilaire still reflect that heritage. Homes built across that long history may have additions and repairs from many decades. Where old and new pipe meet is a common spot for leaks, so it's worth having a plumber look at any joins you can see.
