Finding Your Main Water Shut-Off in a Yakima Home
When a pipe bursts, the fastest way to limit damage is to close the main valve. Finding it calmly on a quiet day is much easier than searching in the dark with water running.
Request a plumberWhere to look
Follow the line from the street toward the house. In many homes the main sits where the line enters: in a crawl space, a garage, a utility room or near the water heater. Some houses also have a valve in the meter box by the street.
Which way closes it
A lever handle is closed when it sits across the pipe. A round wheel handle closes clockwise. If the valve is hard to turn, don't force it with a wrench: old valves can break and cause the leak you're trying to stop.
Test it
Close the valve and open a faucet. If water keeps running after a minute, the valve isn't sealing. Open it again slowly. A valve that leaks or won't close fully should be replaced before you need it.
Fixture valves
Toilets, sinks and the washing machine should each have a small shut-off. Closing one of these lets you stop a single leak without cutting water to the whole house.
Label it
Tie a tag to the main valve and show everyone in the house where it is. Keep a flashlight nearby if it's in a crawl space.
If something goes wrong
If the valve breaks, won't close or starts leaking, contact the water provider about the curb valve and see emergency plumbing.
Crawl space valves
If your main is in the crawl space, check that the hatch opens easily and the path to the valve is clear. Store a flashlight and a pair of gloves by the hatch. In a burst, getting to a valve buried behind stored boxes or insulation wastes the minutes that matter most.
